Join the fun in our high adventure program for older boys of your troop, team or crew. The Nevada Area Council, BSA is proud to offer a backpacking program through Lassen Volcanic National Park.
To visit Lassen Volcanic National Park is to witness a brief moment in the ancient battle between the earth shaping forces of creation and destruction in Northern California. Nestled within Lassen’s peaceful forests and untouched wilderness, hissing fumaroles and boiling mud pots still shape and change the land, evidence of Lassen’s long fiery and active past.
There are two great ways to use this opportunity.
When your troop comes to camp, your younger boys can stay at camp with two leaders and participate in the NEW trail to first class program, conducted in the Scoutcraft Area, and merit badge program. While they are busy learning the skills necessary to advance in rank your older boys (13 years old or older) along with two leaders can take a trip into the back country and learn from an experienced guide how the earth was formed through volcanic activity. Your troop must be able to provide enough adult leadership to comply with the Guide to Safe Scouting.
Bring your older boys (13 years old or older) to camp and let them have a great week doing things they have always wanted to do. Backpacking, camping, enjoying time with peers and associating with adults (allowing the boys to feel more like men). Your older boys along with two leaders can take a trip into the back country and learn from an experienced guide how the earth was formed through volcanic activity.
The backcountry group is limited to 7 youth and 2 adults.
The trip is catered to the experience level of your group. The difficulty and length of the trip is decided by you. These trips are designed to have the group leave on Monday and stay out on the trail until Thursday afternoon. This will allow your Troop to participate in the Native American Pow-Wow on Thursday and the camp wide games on Friday including the Seneca Run.
The fee for the backcountry adventure is $270 per person, youth and adults. For this fee the camp will provide a trekking guide that has been trained by the National Camping School of the Boy Scouts of America. We will also provide all the food necessary for the trip and take care of all permits. If anyone in your group has special dietary needs please let the Camp Director know as soon as possible so we can find a suitable menu. Some equipment is available to your troop to use on the trip for a small rental fee. MSR Whisperlite stoves with fuel bottles and fuel, MSR Miniworks Water filters, MSR cook sets, and Kelty backpacking tents (just over 4 lbs complete).
Make your reservation soon to ensure your opportunity to take this great adventure. At this time we are only able to provide one trip per week. Once we have every week full we will add an additional trekking guide to accommodate a second group each week. For more information, or to make your reservation call the Nevada Area Council, BSA at 775-787-1111.
